Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erbil Akbil

Dr. Akbil, one of the former ministers of Education and Culture of TRNC, was born in Cyprus in 1945. He has completed his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering, at the Middle East Technical University of Ankara, Turkey. In 1978, receiving a fulbright scholarship, he started with his graduate studies, at Rutgers University, USA. After completing his master and PhD programs, he returned to Cyprus in 1982 and started at the Higher Technological Institute of Famagusta and he worked as the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering for 4 years.
With the establishment of the Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) in 1986, he was appointed as the first vice rector of the EMU. From 1986 to 2008 he served at various academic and administrative positions, about 15 years of it as a vice rector, 2 years as a Department Head and one year as the Dean of Faculty of Engineering.
During 2004-5 he served as the Minister of Education and Culture of the TRNC. In 2005 he returned back to EMU as a faculty member and continued at that position for about 9 years. Within this period he served as a vice-rector for about one year. His community services icluded Chair of the Executive Council of Bayrak Radio and TV of TRNC, Chair of the Executive Council of Atatürk Teachers Academy, and Chair of the Executive Council of EMU Staff Solidarity Cooperative and Bank.
Dr. Akbil joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Cyprus International University (CIU) in 2014. There he has been an active member of the ECTS and faculty accreditation committees. He has organized and delivered 5 workshops on Constructive Alignment and SOLO taxonomy, and one workshop for ECTS credit system. Dr. Akbil has been serving as a voluntary MÜDEK (Turkish Association for Evaluation and Accreditation Programs) evaluator since 2011, and took part, as a member, in MÜDEK accredidation teams of enginnering programs, in Turkey.
